Jillian Dempsey, Gigi Marvin Power Pride Past Beauts

By Amanda Ghysel, 11/17/18, 10:00PM EST

Boston Pride captain Jillian Dempsey and forward Gigi Marvin each scored twice as the Pride took a 4-1 win over the Buffalo Beauts on Saturday night at Warrior Ice Arena, as Boston improved to 3-1 on the season and Buffalo dropped to 2-3. The Pride jumped into second place behind the undefeated Whitecaps (6-0).

Pride goaltender Katie Burt took the ceremonial faceoff as Raquel Ferreira, Senior Vice President of Major and Minor League Baseball Operations for the Red Sox, and her daughter dropped the puck on a night when the Red Sox World Series trophy was in the building.

Dempsey opened the scoring for Boston 13:58 into the first period, capitalizing on a setup from Lexi Bender and Jordan Smelker.

Marvin then pushed the Pride’s lead to 2-0 just over two minutes into the second period. The Beauts pressured after Marvin’s tally, with a number of chances, including a Savannah Harmon backhand that sailed just high of the net. Buffalo found an answer just over five minutes later, with Hayley Scamurra burying a rebound from Sarah Edney to bring Buffalo within one on Scamurra’s team-leading fourth goal of the season.

The teams traded power play opportunities late in the second period, but neither team was able to take advantage.

Dempsey secured the win for Boston with her second of the night 6:40 into the third period to give the Pride a 3-1 lead. Marvin added her second of the night – and second empty-net goal of the season – with just over three minutes remaining.

The Pride played shutdown defense, smothering a number of Beauts chances on zone entries. Boston Burt continued to impress, making 25 saves on the night. Burt has yet only allowed more than two goals once so far this season. Dempsey, Marvin and rookie McKenna Brand led the Pride with four shots on goal each. Dempsey’s pair of goals now have her leading the team with five points on the season.

Scamurra now has eight points on the season (4G, 4A) to lead the Beauts and rank second in the league.

The teams faceoff in a rematch on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Warrior Ice Arena. Tickets are still available at
